Review of The Class (2007) by Rob H — 07 Oct 2009
Definitely one of those films where critics cream their pants and the common folk are left scratching their respective heads (or balls)(or both).
The first thing I want to address is the length. Almost every scene felt like it was too long, from the second half of the movie onward. The dialogue seemed to be going no where and nothing new. I was watching repeats. As a whole, the film could have been shorter which would have made the film less tiring. But thats me.
Note: this is NOT one of the Denzel Washington movies. As in, you aren't going to see that miraculous turnaround. The teacher doesn't get to know his students. The students seem to care about school less at the end of the year, than in the beginning. No student stands up for their teacher when he gets in trouble. Most people probably hate this, but I found it refreshing.
The film brilliantly captured the idea of, "How do you teach kids who don't want to learn?". After watching the film, I'm even less sure of the answer. Frustrating movie, tiring at times, but you can't deny it gets the message across.
