Review of The Class (2007) by Ross M — 21 Jan 2011
Who'd have thought a film about school would be so interesting? In the cases with Hollywood High-School films, extra scenes are pumped in to keep the audience interested, whilst students are just different stereotypes who only speak to further the typically soppy story.
However, the students in the class are relateable. We either ARE them or we KNOW them. Meanwhile, the teacher (François Bégaudeau playing a version of his real self) isn't some maverick who deeply inspires the students to change their attitude.
No, he is a teacher with flaws like any other person in that profession. It's the authencity of the film that is so endearing. The dialogue, improvised by the cast (made up of real students, not 20 year old fakes) is made up of lines that remind us of our time at school and their actions and expressions appear natural.
The Class is a fantastic character study that thrives on empathy of the audience.
