Review of The Circus (1928) by Terri H — 11 Oct 2008
Surprisingly flat Chaplin film, especially when you consider the work Lloyd ("Speedy", "The Kid Brother") and Keaton ("The Cameraman")were doing at the same time. This film includes some very lazy writing.
When the Tramp is chased by the cop when he first enters, the circus audience goes NUTS! But he's not even doing anything very funny. Lloyd or Keaton would have given their characters gags and a reason for the audience to laugh.
The addition of Chaplin singing the opening song during the titles does NOT make the film better.
