Review of The Circus (1928) by Matthew D — 07 Jun 2007
My first Chaplin experience. This is hands down Chaplin's funniest and least sentimental film. Given the extraordinary number of mishaps and setbacks during the film's production (including his studio burning down), it's amazing he even got it completed.
Chaplin hated the slapstick tradition of his Keystone days, so this film takes aim at that, as well as a few muted points of social commentary. All this is set against the backdrop of a beautiful love/heartbreak story told in a uniquely Chaplin way.
