Review of The Circle (2017) by Roey K — 30 May 2017
As other critics and reviewers put it - the movie hovers around some big issues of the "Black Mirror" type, but fails to really explain or take any side.
It's unclear if movie really promotes that privacy should be replaced by "transparncy / openess and honesty" to make a better world, or if it shows us how and why privacy is important or at least be balanced (it doesn't say this at all, but maybe the story is just for us to see and then think about it).
What also bothers is the characters (all of them) being unable to discuss these issues, and perhaps even worse - have any kind of true position on the subject, as if they either are not willing or strong enough to bring it up or worse - they don't really have a position, only some feelings which are brushed aside (Ty not really challanging the system but only wanting to ensure that its fair and not hypocritical and explotive, Annie who at some unclear point starts going "this is bulls**t but ends up just balancing her health without a real opinion or action, and Mae who seems like she is troubled during the whole film from the affects on her personal life but every step just keeps forward and gets even more extreme in embracing the cult as if she accepts the ideas of The Circle without doubt).
So it ends up only frustrating audiences, with characters completely unchanging/deceloping and an unclear message regarding the issues brought up.
