Review of The Cincinnati Kid (1965) by David D — 10 Sep 2007
This film was largely forgotten before poker became cool again, but has now found a new audience. The main plot revolves around The Kid's attempt to beat the world's greatest player, but the subplot around attempts to "fix" the game is far more intersting, perhaps because the supporting cast (Karl Malden, Ann Margaret, Rip Torn) is outstanding, where Steve McQueen is painfully unemotive as the Kid.
(Contrast to Paul Newman playing a similar character in The Hustler.) Still, the film builds to a dramatic climax and poker novices can keep up. Thumbs up.
