Review of The Cider House Rules (1999) by Jeff S — 13 Sep 2012
I love this movie. Apart from an early look at abortion rights and the feelings that evokes, there's an endearing affirmation of the value of life. So many excellent performances; Michael Caine as an ether-addicted orphanage/pregnancy doctor, and Wilbur, his protege and an orphan himself played by Toby Maguire. Charlize Theron and Paul Rudd as a couple in love (and trouble) come to St. Cloud Maine for a solution. Soon they head back to their idealic Apple farm near the coast and Wilbur tags along. There, he is confronted with love and the beauty it can bring as well as the ugly. In the end, Wilbur has to examine what his priorities are, and where/how he should live his life.
Lasse Holstrom's Mona Lisa, no doubt about it.
