Review of The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008) by Shawn E — 20 May 2012
In film/technical terms, this is a far better movie than the first. Andrew Adamson has obviously learned a lot from the first movie, and has applied his new skills to this one. Likewise for the kids. They've also improved greatly. It's a real joy to watch them grow up.
However, narratively, there really just isn't much to boast about (this is more C.S. Lewis' fault than the film writers'). But, Adamson and his team do a lot with a little, and succeed...maybe not always with flying colors, but I was too entertained to notice.
As a side note, there really is no denying that these films really are Lord of the Rings for a younger generation. In metaphorical terms...if LOTR is the ultimate roller coaster in the whole theme park, Narnia is the kid's roller coaster. It's still fun, but it really just can't compare with the thrill of the best. With that said, I'd also like to point out that the movies are starting to hit their stride and will hopefully be more comfortable when Michael Apted takes over for Dawn Treader.
