Review of The China Syndrome (1979) by Ash S — 18 Jul 2007
When asked what is my favorite horror film, I always reply "The China Syndrome".
See, films like Frankenstein, Dracula, Friday the 13th, etcetera, I have a hard time suspending reality; there's always a small part of me that KNOWS this is a movie.
Not so with The China Syndrome.
The horror is not so much of a nuclear disaster but the beaurocracy behind such an event happening; and yes, I did see this film two weeks after Three Mile Island happened back in 1979.
When you watch this film (either for the first time or again) notice that there is no music to heighten the drama; only the incidental music coming from a jukebox or a radio.
Kudos to Jack Lemmon, Jane Fonda, and Michael Douglas for their marvelous work in this film, and character actor Wilford Brimley steals the scenes he's in with the greatest of ease.
I highly recommend you own this on DVD.
