Review of The Children's Hour (1961) by Steve P — 17 Jul 2009
A brilliant movie about two women who run a boarding school for girls who are accused of lesbianism by a manipulative student. Compelling viewing, shocking finale. Despite its age (made in 1961 when anything homosexual was banned from cinema screens) has a lot to say about social attitudes towards homosexuality.
If the movie had been made today, it would, of course, be very different. Best appreciated for a movie of its era. Shirley MacLaine has said that, on the set of the movie, they didn't really know what they were portraying and never talked with each other about the issues.
Unbelievable!
