Review of The Children's Hour (1961) by Jessica D — 10 Jan 2010
Great movie! Audrey Hepburn is divine, of course, demonstrating why she became known as such a great actress. James Garner and Shirley MacLaine too, both shine as the stars they are.
One of the things I enjoy most about b&w movies is it is about the story and bare-knuckle acting. No special effects here, just raw talent and great story telling. And what a story. Every bit as provocative as To Kill A Mockingbird. It also sheds new light onto the first vignette of If These Walls Could Talk 2, with Vanessa Redgrave, demonstrating what the social climate was like for gays and lesbians just fifty years ago.
Powerful, if predictable ending. It's predictability doesn't detract from the movie at all though. This is a must see for anyone who simply enjoys good movies.
