Review of The Children's Hour (1961) by Jeff B — 26 Oct 2011
Well, this movie was all over the place. At times it was very boring, at times it was unintentionally hilarious, and at times it was pretty powerful. Directed by William Wyler and starring Audrey Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine, it's one of those movies that was controversial for its time, but seems a little tame now.
Hepburn and MacLaine are friends who run a girls boarding school, but after one of the young students tells a lie about them, their lives are torn apart. The first 30 minutes are so boring, I wanted to turn it off a few times, but I stayed with it.
The girl Mary is so campy, it's just too perfect, she's just so evil but so hilarious, it's unbelievable, she seems like Eric Cartman if he was a girl. There's a scene when she's standing on the stairs, her face is just priceless, someone give her an Oscar.
Fay Bainter was very good as the girl's aunt. And the final 20 minutes of the film was very good though, as far as acting goes. But whatever, I don't know what to think of this film.
