Review of The Children of Huang Shi (2008) by Paul T — 22 Jan 2009
A truly inspiring story is almost ruined by a script which at times is like a TV Movie of the Week! And Johnathan Rhys Meyers cannot act... what happened to him? On the plus side are strong production values and beautiful scenery, a fabulous supporting cast of young Chinese actors, an always good Radha Mitchell and a classy cameo from Michelle Yeoh.
For all the film's faults though, this based on fact tale draws you in to its wondrous story which juxtaposes the futility of war with the courage of the human spirit and the power of love, and every now and then it really hits home.
