Review of The Children of Huang Shi (2008) by David P — 26 Sep 2011
I never thought that I would actually see Chow Youn-Fat in an English language movie that was actually good. The less I say about his previous English language efforts the better. Michelle Yeoh's track record for English language films isn't very good either. At least she has SUNSHINE and as a good friend of mine said as we were walking out of the theater after seeing TOMORROW NEVER DIES: "It was kind of nice that they let Jame Bond be in a Michelle Yeoh movie.".
This film has one of the better portrayals of what happened in Nanking when the Japanese occupied it in WWII. It does not feel like explotation, nor is it over reverent like the movie NANKING and nor does it try so hard to be the Cninese version of SCHINDLER'S LIST that it almost completely misses. And the Nanking sequence is only a small part of this wonderful film, the type of wich you rarely see these days.
