Review of The Changeling (1980) by Max M — 08 Oct 2008
A well-crafted and damn creepy ghost story. George C. Scott stars as a composer who, following the deaths of his wife and child, moves into a large old house that contains many secrets and the restless spirit of a murdered child.
Along with having a terrific story (that is detective story as well as horror), this picture also demonstrates that movies of this sort are probably better off without ridiculously over-done CGI effects work. Director Peter Medak takes a cue from another superior ghost story, Robert Wise's 1963 film The Haunting, and simply uses sound effects, hovering, third-person POV camera angles, and the movement of objects to create tension and white-knuckle suspense.
