Review of The Changeling (1980) by Elias R — 15 Jan 2013
This movie is often compared to The Haunting of Hill House. I can understand why. A little advice for all the directors out there. If your going to make a scary ghost story, the house you set it in almost has to be as scary as the ghost your story is about.
In fact, I would say that the best ghost films are really about the houses the ghosts are set in. With that being said, The Changeling is a great ghost story, and has a depth to it that gives a lot of context to the ghost itself.
Although in my opinion, it is a somewhat dim candle compared to Hill House, it has taken its cues from a day when you needed a fantastically creepy story to deliver scares as opposed to visual jumps and boo's.
I would highly recommend seeing it, and highly recommend it as part of any horror fans repertoire.
