Review of The Central Park Five (2012) by Amilcar A — 16 Dec 2012
If you want to watch a movie that will make your blood boil and make you lose faith on the criminal and judicial system in the US, the Central Park 5 is a perfect choice. As I watched the doc, I could not believe what was on the screen. The abuse and complete lack of regard for the judicial system and due process was perplexing.
The documentary tells the story of 5 kids - literally children between 14-16 - that get wrongly accused and imprisoned over a horrific crime they didn't commit. Given the nature of the crime, that I shall not describe, the story captured the news like wildfire and made these innocent teens the victims of a totally botched case.
What is truly amazing is how the system all collapsed in their faces. As a matter of fact, instead of providing any protection and an avenue to investigate the real crime, the system turned on them and made them a scapegoat.
Not only did the process screw them over, but it ruined their lives. As the real culprit was identified and he confessed, these now men, could not turn back the clock. They had all spent anywhere between 7 and 13 years in prison. How is that time and the loss of innocence ever going to be given back.
A very good documentary. Worth every minute and the price of admission.
