Review of The Cars That Ate Paris (1974) by Sydney R — 11 Jun 2007
Inspired somewhat by Jean-Luc Godard's 'Weekend', Peter Weir's courageous little debut predated, or at least certainly tipped its Akubra hat towards the advent of a new genre - the 'Aussie Urban Western', (heralded by George Miller's seminal 'Mad Max') by almost 5 years!! The budget is obviously very low, but the B-grade Horror/Exploitation style of the movie actually plays a pretty integral role in evoking the overall feeling of angst and paranoia which proliferates in the remote little Australian country town of Paris.
It never ceases to amaze me how some of the most accomplished film makers on the circuit always begin their career by making Horror Movies, or genre-hopping little gems like this.
