Review of The Caretaker (2016) by Rika R — 31 Oct 2016
The Caretaker is an incredibly well constructed horror film and a pleasant surprise among the recently released films in the genre. This film takes the unique approach of focusing on the characters and the story to create elements of horror, rather than trying to scare audiences with intense gore.
Mallorie and August (played by Meegan Warner and Sean Martini respectively), move into Mallorie's grandmother's house to take care of her as her health deteriorates. Not only does the grandmother, Birdie (Sondra Blake), suffer from psychosis, but her illness drives her back into her Wiccan ways to resurface deceased family members and confront dark family secrets.
The high-contrast lighting and incredible cinematography, combined with the incredible production design of the old, haunted house, only adds to the convincing performances of the three main characters, to make this a perfect new horror film.
