Review of The Car (1977) by Mereie D — 30 May 2010
Impressive where it comes to the crucial scenes, but lacking in its detailing is how I would summarize my opinion of â??The Carâ??. The demonic car is genuinely scary in all its darkness, massiveness and noisiness.
It brings back memories of that other scary-vehicle movie, â??Duelâ?? (1971), Stephen Spielbergâ??s directional debut, with the difference that in â??Duelâ??, the intentionally murderous vehicle turns out to have an actual driver.
In â??The Carâ??, the theme is closer to religious horror, with same satanic entity driving the car. In both films, there is (alas) no clarity as to why the vehicle is doing what it does and whether it picks its victims randomly or not.
Great special effects in â??The Carâ?? â?? pity about the occasional artificial speeding up of the images, though. This makes it all look more clumsy than it could have done. I wasnâ??t too pleased about the scenes around the action scenes, which I found too long and stretched out, and too predictable.
The whole personal-relationships-in-small-Utah-community-including-complications thing tended to get up my nose. The cosiness and community bonding in the private domain and at work is too put-on. It takes the angle out of what could have been an all-exiting movie.
