Review of The Canyons (2013) by Patrick D — 16 Aug 2013
THE CANYONS is the most perfect film I have seen in years. Audaciously awful and seriously brilliant at the same time. Schrader and Ellis have made exactly the film they wanted to make. Self-serious and pretentious, the film is a work from two older men clearly out of touch but totally in touch with our time.
Is it possible for a work of art to elicit such disparate responses in one person? Yes. That's rare. And THE CANYONS is such a rarity. Lindsay Lohan gives a pitch perfect performance while all the other actors seem totally out of sorts but isn't that the point of this beautiful monstrosity? THE CANYONS may just be the best and worst film of the year or the decade!
