Review of The Call (2013) by Sam C — 04 Aug 2013

The Call is a film that had a good premise and could have been something good but unfortunately it just wasn't executed well due to the poorly written script and bad direction. Every year we get a bunch of pointless horror/thriller movies like this one and sadly lots of people spend their money on movies like this which only makes studios make more of them.

I mean they are all the same, they follow the same exact formula and do nothing new. Before I put in The Call into my Blu-Ray player I expected nothing and you know what I got once I finished watching it; nothing.

The thing that bothered me the most about this movie was it's script that was written by Richard D'Ovidio. I will admit that there were a couple of parts where I started to get into the film but I never stayed invested long because either some stupid cliché would happen or some very bad dialogue would be spoken out of the mouth of some pointless side character.

This story is as clichéd as it gets, the only part of this film that isn't really clichéd is the ending which I thought was pure garbage. I hated the ending to this movie so much, it just pissed me off so much.

The only way I could describe this without spoiling the ending is by say the film ends, it just ends and leaves you there confused as hell. Other than the story the dialogue was pretty awful and there was also too many useless side characters that didn't help the plot at all.

Brad Anderson is the director of this film and I just didn't like his style at all, he did help create some cool and thrilling scenes but in the end I found his style too distracting. To me the best part about this film is the acting.

Honestly I don't know why Halle Berry is in this movie but she was good and definitely the best part about the film. I found Abigail Breslin extremely annoying at some points but there were also times where I didn't mind her, I guess her performance was just really inconsistent to me.

In the end The Call is just another dumb horror movie, if you dig movies like this get a group of friends and watch it at you home.
