Review of The Cake Eaters (2007) by Jim C — 09 May 2010
I could easily have given this film 4 stars had it not been for the terrible casting of Bruce Dern and Elizabeth Ashley. Or maybe it was just poor direction from Mary Stuart Masterson when it came to the old timers, who knows.
The film's saving grace came from the few scenes with Kristen Stewart and Aaron Stanford alone; they had good chemistry. I was glad to see Kristen Stewart not go over the top with her portrayal of Georgia, the girl with Friedreich's Ataxia - it would have been easy for her to do that.
Instead, she delivered a good performance in keeping with her better roles. And by better roles, I mean anything but Bella in 'Twilight'. Overall, 'The Cake Eaters' is worth seeing, if only for the scenes with Beagle and Georgia.
