Review of The Cable Guy (1996) by Mareen K — 15 Jul 2010
I often heard that the movie was terrible, a low in Carrey's career and I guess also in Stiller's. But I also heard that this was an overlooked little treasure, that it was really an amazing performance that people just don't get and that you'd have to view it more as a thriller than a comedy.
Well, it doesn't really work as either, is what I think after finally having seen it. Carrey actually is creepy -- really really creepy. He can totally pull off the psycho thing, the total nut job.
But it is too slapstick-y to be brilliant and way too over the top to be convincing or funny or anything like it. He proves that he can scare people. Man, can he scare people. That's it. There sure are some nice ideas here and there.
But also many bad ones. The medieval restaurant scene is one of the most terrible I have seen. So while I can kinda see the slight traces of originality that could have made this good, I am now one of the people saying this sucks.
