Review of The Cabin in the Woods (2012) by Sgt. C — 18 Jul 2014
(93%).
My personal favourite movie of the year, and indeed one of my favourite movies all time, which is strange as I was in two minds to even watch it after seeing the perfectly decent, yet not exactly mind blowing trailer (it is not an easy film to advertise as the less you know about it the better). I have hardly ever been as intrigued by any movie's plot as much as this one, as every time a question is answered, or at least partly answered, another pops straight back up until the very final moments, that's something really quite difficult to do and the writers should be proud of themselves for pulling it off. The film persuades the audience that what they are watching is a perfectly normal, generic horror movie only every so often it raises a question "what are the bad guys motives, and who the hell are they ?" The direction is spot-on, the cast is perfect, the writing couldn't be better, I laughed at the superb comedy parts that worked so fantastically well, it's just such an entertaining movie with so much going for it. It's maybe not 100% perfect (the ending is a little OTT) but I don't care as I'll stand by this movie as a future classic. A brilliant, brilliant film and a genuine surprise.
