Review of The Butler (2013) by Roxanne R — 15 Jan 2014
Very good and powerful performances by Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey. I have not seen all the best picture nominees but The Butler is deserving of a nomination, most definitely! Inspired by true events, this is a journey of American history, covering the tumultuous decades of the 50's, 60's and 70's that changed American society as experienced through the eyes of a black man named Cecil Gaines.
Despite the vicissitudes of Gaine's life, his steadfast decision to leave the South gave him a chance for a better life culminating in a job as a butler at the White House. While working in D.C, Cecil meets and marries Gloria (Winfrey), and the couple have two children: Louis and Charlie.
During his 34-year tenure serving as a White House butler, Cecil and his family experience some highs and devastating lows but despite it all, the ending will bring a smile to your face. For those that complain about life's unfairness, you need to watch this movie then ask yourself if life really has been that unfair to you! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED and kudos to the cast and crew of this remarkable film!!!
