Review of The Butcher Boy (1998) by Mathieu B — 31 Dec 2007
Set in a semi-stereotypical Catholic backwater, Neil Jordan's gruesome journey charts the external descent and internal heroics of Francie Brady, in a society gripped by cold war terror and religious fanaticism.
Familiar Irish theatrical faces pop up to frolic in the savage comedic madness, even Sinead O' Connor, slightly less grating as usual in her role as the Madonna to Francie's tortured sinner. One of the most powerful, and least self conscious, Irish cinematic excursions of the 1990s.
