Review of The Butcher Boy (1998) by Arseniy V — 07 Jun 2011
Awful events occur, in Francie's real world or in his imagination but they are all presented from Francie's enthusiastic perspective. The same is true for the many very sad events in the story.
All the characters are very interesting and very well acted. The kid who plays the young Francie is especially good as is the actress who plays Mrs. Nugent. At first I found the film kind of slow but as weirdness increased, the pace picked up.
The tale of a schizophrenic boy raised by a bipolar mother and an alcoholic father would seem certain to be a depressing tale, yet despite the horrible events that unfold in this story it is always upbeat and at times hilarious.
