Review of The Business of Being Born (2008) by Amy R — 30 May 2008
Very disappointing. I think that home births and/or using doulas/midwives are a great idea, but this documentary is so blatantly biased that it's hard to take the message seriously. Between the clips of John Cleese & co.
doing a spoof of the birth experience (which was funny) and playing goofy music every time a hospital birth process was shown, you just get the sense that anyone who goes to a hospital is a moron. The implication is that having a hospital birth is almost certain to end in disaster, aka a C-section.
I wouldn't argue that there are many interventions done in the interest of saving time or preventing lawsuits, but not all hospitals are like that. The bottom line is that women need to be well informed about their options so that they don't get bullied into making a decision that's in the best interest of the doctor or hospital.
