Review of The Brown Bunny (2003) by John A — 29 Oct 2007
As a piece of commercial entertainment, this film is the equivalent of a half a bottle of sedatives. It is so boring that that an average minute seems to last at least ten. There is a sequence that is literally a single lock-down shot looking out the front window of a moving vehicle for the entire duration of a song! and that is one of the more exciting moments.
I am not defending the film, but I do understand what Gallo was going for here - real life unfolding in real time in an attempt to capture extreme realism. It's an ambitious prospect, and he should be commended for even trying - strictly in the name of art.
And to be honest with you, I was sucked into it myself. But that does not make it any less of an endurance test for the audience. For those with the strength to make it through (or those who use the Chapter skip button on their remotes)their is a sweet reward at the end of the rainbow: aside from a plot twist that puts a little more meat onto the bare bones of the script, we have Chloe Sevigny.
Chloe is a cult movie actress that has managed to appear in some major studio films, and more recently on the Bill Paxton series BIG LOVE. As a well respected actress, it is a HUGE surprise to see her engage in a sequence that does not insinuate oral sex, but blatantly depicts it on a pornographic level.
Is it worth the wait? Your damn rights it is.
