Review of The Brown Bunny (2003) by Dave B — 17 Dec 2007
This movie has NO redeeming value. It's incredibly boring, incredibly misogynistic, incredibly narcissistic crap. There is one scene where something actually happens (and I'm not referring to the blowjob scene which is clearly an ego move for Gallo because it adds nothing to the story) but the poignancy and tragedy of the situation is lost because Gallo completely ignores an opportunity to say something important and makes it all about him again.
I really loved "Buffalo 66" even though it's also sexist and self-indulgent, but there's a sweetness and vulnerability to it that "The Brown Bunny" just doesn't have. Everything important that happens (which is very little) is totally ignored and everything ridiculous and wrong is magnified and played up.
I can't imagine how much it must have REALLY sucked before Gallo got pissed off at Ebert and edited that 20 or so minutes out of it. It still sucked, but not for quite as long so I guess THAT is the blessing.
