Review of The Brotherhood of Satan (1971) by Del T — 03 May 2010
This movie scared the hell out of me as a kid. Saw it again last week on TCM. Looking at it now, it's still very creepy and disturbing. Middle class parents and their daughter stop in a normal looking town, to find out something is preventing them from leaving.
In fact dozens of people have died in the last few days, trying to leave the town, and their kids all go missing. Very low budget, but I marveled how effective scares can be achieved by the simplest of means ( ie closeups of the children's toys ).
Extremely unsettling ending. The aura of menace offset somewhat by Strother Martin's hammy performance.
