Review of The Brood (1979) by Al S — 09 Jul 2008
Cronenberg has called this his version of KRAMER VS. KRAMER, which it is in a perverse sort of way. Cronenberg enters his "middle period" here, after his initial films SHIVERS and RABID.
In SHIVERS, the parasites were created by a well-meaning scientist and in RABID the new strain of rabies was created as the result of an experimental skin graft. Now Cronenberg sets his sights on psychiatrists. He actually has very good actors in this film, Oliver Reed and Samantha Eggar along with Canucks like Art Hindle. Very creepy stuff.
