Review of The Brood (1979) by Josie B — 28 May 2012
REALLY uncomfortable, which one expects when dealing with a David Cronenberg film. The premise is pretty outrageous, but it is executed with a straight face, which makes it all the more upsetting. There are grotesque sights peppered throughout, and those moments are very strong (almost too strong).
The squeamish would do well to avoid this film, but for anyone who's game, the intellectual ideas at play - coupled with the Freudian, subtexual elements - make this more than just a schlocky horror film.
It doesn't fire on all cylinders, but it accomplishes enough of what it sets out to do to warrant it being considered a modest success.
