Men actually died trying to make this film but their death was not in vain. What you see is what you really get with the ending. Is Colonel Nicholson played by a reluctant Alec Guinness ( he repeatedly said no and only signed at the last minute, as did Holden) the greatest character in the history of world cinema? Possibly yes, and Holden is legendary.
The only thing that doesn't make this film perfect is that it's fiction. The ending lingers in the mind a long time no matter how many times one sees it.
