What's with willliam holden and bridges in asia? (he was also in "the bridges at toko-ri") this movie started off a little slow because I wasn't sure how it was going to go; but it picked up eventually and ended with some great drama. I think it's worth watching without knowing what you're getting into - like I did.
What struck me most about the movie was how nihilistic it was. in terms of symbolism, I see alec guinness' colonel as a romantic idealist whereas holden plays a pragmatic and somewhat hedonistic character. both end up being annihilated by forces beyond them and ultimately denied any meaning. in the end everything wiped out. only the cynical and nihilistic doctor is there to say "madness!".
