Review of The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) by Matt M — 12 Jan 2013
While WWII British soldiers led by Col. Nicholson are forced to build a bridge as prisoners of war to the Japanese, British and American officers conspire its destruction. Based on a novel by Pierre Boulle which is in turn based on a true story, this is an outstanding piece of work.
Under the wonderful direction of David Lean, helped by excellent performances by the cast especially Alec Guinness as the British Colonel, this film is a spectacular and psychologically complex war film with exciting action, great photography that fully takes in its majestic setting, and a climax that is one of the best endings in film history.
