Review of The Bride with White Hair (1993) by Dave C — 01 Jan 2009
A fantastic wuxia fairy tale and story of tragic romance. Director Ronny Yu (who is tragically underused in Hollywood since coming to the US to make movies) presents a story with a deliberate look and feel of a stage play but with beautiful scenery and effects.
Cinematographer Peter Pau, who some might remember as the 2000 Oscar winner for best cinematography for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon takes a modest budget Hong Kong film and makes it look like a major spectacle.
Film buffs should tune into this film for Pau and Yu's work on the opening scene alone. Bridget Lin and Leslie Chung do a great job as star-crossed lovers from rival sides of a bitter and deadly conflict.
