Review of The Break-Up (2006) by Harry W — 29 Dec 2012
The Break-Up sounds like a romantic comedy but quickly escalates into some form of a drama. Oddly, it intended to be a comedy or possibly some form of black comedy but ended up being a drama with minor comedic undertones.
If you believe this to be a drama, then Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn give great performances, as do John Favreau and Joey Lauren Adams. If you want comedy, then the main source comes from how Jon Favreau is testing a new look and Vincent D'Onofrio going out on a ledge with a squeaky voice. Otherwise, theres little to laugh at.
This is definetely an anti-comedy and is an unintentional drama that happens to feature a lot of great acting and a half-decent screenplay, but the fact that this is an attempted comedy is rather pathetic. As a drama, it works despite a weird story. As a comedy, theres barely any redeeming qualities.
