Review of The Break-Up (2006) by Grant K — 25 Jun 2014
Way to mean â?? spirited for its own good. This movie had a ton of potential â?? considering the chemistry between Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston (even while they are "hating" each other), and the fact that it had a great premise.
But it is completely sabotaged by the tremendously mean â?? spirited tone that permeates the movie, and leaves you feeling like you never want to fall in love again. You get the feeling that the actors feel it as well, since Vaughn's screaming in anger seems genuine, and Aniston's unfiltered bawling near the end makes you feel like you were responsible for it.
It's even more heartbreaking, then, that lost in this quagmire is Jon Favreau, who has a relatively small role yet virtually steals the movie, delivering nearly every strong heartfelt laugh in this flick.
Not the great makings of a movie that was supposed to mix laughter and sadness together.
