Review of The Brave Little Toaster (1987) by Matt A — 03 Nov 2007
The cover is so misleading. A happy toaster that gallops? The vacuum smiles? Never. This movie is one traumatic experience after another. Yeah, as expected it ends on a positive note, but rather than leaving as a happy camper you leave feeling exhausted and relieved.
..as if it ended on a more down note it would be entirely soul crushing and parents would revolt. Okay, maybe others can realize that the characters in this movie are just appliances and can to an extent detach themselves from them.
. but they talk dammit! They have lives and they can die- oh they can die. Is it not frightening when a smiling toaster dangles above a massive bathtub or needs to avoid a hail of forks? If you take the characters in this movie and think of them as humans, it would be one of the darkest films i've ever seen.
Not that it already isn't dark...but you know...they are appliances. That lessens the blow a bit. Still, I found this immensely entertaining and absorbing, perhaps even too absorbing. You wouldn't think that you could use the adjective claustrophobic to describe something that's called "The Brave Little Toaster" but it fits perfectly.
It's kinda like being smothered by the blanky character: first it's all cute and cuddly, but then you realize that you can no longer breathe..
