Review of The Boys from Brazil (1978) by Stephen C — 05 Jan 2011
Ahh the Boys from Brazil a toatlly silly but yet I have enormous affection for this film ,as I do for other Lew Grade souffles like The Medusa Touch and Capricorn One.
This one is all about creating the Fourth Reich using Hitlers blood andhow the deaths of 94 men over sixty ties in with this plan.
But thats by the by whats ace here is some wondefully hammy acting from Laurence Olivier and Gregory Peck and some sensible acting from James Mason.
Peack is great as Joseph Mengle all bluster and killing children he is such a pantomime Villian its hard not to warm to his wonderfully campy performance as he shouts at the screen .
Olivier meanwhile is a delight a the wily old Nazi hunter ,yes he is a Jewish Cliche but hey its fun watching him do his stuff and pitting wits with Peck.
Franklin J Schaffner gives the whole film a wilfully nasty egde with some good murders along the way and then a nasty fate at the hands of dogs for Peck.
They dont make em like this anymore ,shame really as I love every minute of its off kilter moments.
