The animation is incredibly engaging, and the side characters are instantly likeable. But so much of the emotional thread between the two mains is taken for granted, with the audience just having to expect camaraderie to emerge from constant acrimony as is conventional.

I never felt it myself, a problem with this director (I struggled to care about the relationships of characters in The Girl who Leapt through Time, Summer Wars and Wolf Children). But the visuals and some unconventional beats price interesting ( I like the contrast of the human and beast worlds, and the disappointment we feel in those real people that live in the former compared to our fantasy narratives).

Ultimately it's worth seeing, but I'm frustrated that the director still has trouble connecting to my heart the way animation usually does instantly.
