Review of The Boy (2016) by William S — 22 Jun 2016
All in all, I feel it was worth watching. The majority of the film was fantastic, and very suspenseful without too much or too little, and with little to no cliche. The acting was wonderful and believable, I would watch these actors and director again.
HOWEVER.
(SPOILER).
The ending was a real let down. I feel it would have been better and less predictable if Brahms really was just a spirit, that unleashed his full power after the doll was broken, rather than it turning out to be just another "man in the walls" story. It really sort of ruined the mood. Brahms' senselessly attacking literally everyone made no sense. The ending as a whole made no sense, after the point of the doll breaking and the walls rattling.
I also don't like the couple's suicide. Not because of the suicide itself, but because drowning is a terrible way to go, and it would have been simpler if they just ditched Greta and Brahms and never came back. If it was over guilt, there are far quicker, less painful ways.
(END SPOILER).
