Review of The Boxer (1997) by Liann W — 27 Mar 2008
Both Sheridan and double D Lewis just get better with age. I am very curious to see the 50 cent movie now. Never dreamed it was done by a capable director.
Like many other Sheridan films, this one satisfies many genres while somehow manages to be all at once. It works as a forbidden romance.... as an underdog, redemption movie... as a historical period piece... as a drama/thriller... and especially as a boxing flick. Beautiful cinematography, makes some heavy-laden romantic dialogue work in its context, and keeps you on your dramatic toes throughout. Am becoming a big fan of Sheridan these days.
