Review of The Boxer (1997) by Erno K — 21 Nov 2008
Everything that has a Daniel Day-Lewis in it must be watched by me eventually, that is the natural order of things.
It is strange to watch the great thespian being almost like a normal guy, after so many incredible transformations into something larger than life. This time he is a terrorist turned boxer. This movie is pretty depressing, I must say. There's little joy in the lives of the people in it. Even the sets look very bleak and cold. The colors are also diluted for maximum angst effect.
I dunno, I needed something more than this. There is really no plot to speak of. The main bastard Harry is such a huge fucker that he takes way too long to die. I hate when that happens in a movie. Daniel also plays his part too nonchalantly. I want to see those monster performances from him, every actor could have pulled this character off!
In the end, this is a small scale Irish drama with some bombs. And boxing.
