Review of The Boxer (1997) by Charlie M — 30 Jul 2011
The Boxer, An often overlooked piece of Daniel Day-lewis's career. This film is not a comment on the trials and tribulations between the IRA and British government, as much as it is a window into the lives of the people who lived through it.
Jim Sheridan captures the pride and will of Ireland, skating the line between pride and ignorance. Emily Watson precisely plays the part of the love interest. who is buried under guilt and lust. Although this all- star cast emulates the spirit of thie Irish people, showing not themselves but true characters.
The one who shines in this film is Ciarán Fitzgerald who plays Liam. Fitzgerald matches every other actor in this film on the same if not a higher level. He much like every single person in this cast illuminates the struggle and power of the Irish people.
