Review of The Box (2009) by Thomas P — 05 Nov 2012
A trippy and atmospheric mind game of a film that fails to reward the audience with it's lack of motivation and any real thoughtfulness. Still, the film is interesting up until the drastic shift in tone that Donnie Darko driector Richard Kelly seems to relish in.
The camerawork and atmosphere throughout will definatley intrigue, but once the big turn hits you, you'll either be lost or completely disappointed with how oddly the twist unravels before you. The premise had alot of promise, a couple being presented with a requiem of press a button win a million dollars, but somebody somewhere dies.
Would you do it? Are we all so un-human in our choices throughout society today? The film brings some questions to mind and does have some moments that I would describe as slightly powerful. Overall, The Box is a film that seems a bit too unreal to hold any water, and is ultimately unrewarding in it's plot and bitter ending.
