Review of The Bounty (1984) by Ibrahim E — 06 Aug 2010
This is the classic story of The Bounty and Lieutenant William Bligh (Anthony Hopkins), whose cruelty and leadership led to a mutiny on the ship while on their way back to England from Tahiti. This version follows both the efforts of Fletcher Christian (Mel Gibson) to get his men beyond the reach of British retribution, and the epic voyage of Lieutenant Bligh to get his loyalists safely to East Timor in a tiny lifeboat.
Somehow I thought I had seen "The Bounty", but I hadn´t of some reason. I remember vividly when it came out in the summer of 1984 at least. I would claim that "The Bounty" is not too shabby due to the great cast and names. The rest is maybe a bit dated in the visual/cinematic vision, and with the soundtrack of Vangelis we REALLY step back into the mid-eighties. Good to see Mel Gibson in shape with the intenseness he had back then. And Hopkins is as sharp as ever as Bligh. As said, an ok adventure picture from the good old 80´s.
