Review of The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day (2009) by Sarah . — 30 Dec 2010
If you read or glanced at my last review of the first film, you will know that the original Boondock Saints (1999) is one of my favorite films of all time. After 10 years, they finally decided to release the highly-anticipated sequel, The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day.
The reviews of this one were generally mixed. Some loved it and some thought it was highly dissappointed. I woud say I am right in the middle. Although slightly dissappointing and highly inferior to the amazing original, I thought this was still a solid sequel to the cult hit.
Most of the actors from the original return to reprise their roles. Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus return as the two Irish Catholic brothers on a journey back to Boston to clean up more crime.
My favorite thing about the original was Willem Dafoe's character, sadly he only returns in a small cameo near the end. Because Rocco was killed in the original, he returns in a cameo dream sequence that the two brothers have.
The replacements for Rocco and Dafoe are very good though. The Mexican tough guy the brothers pick up to replace Rocco is absolutely hilarious and really adds some nice comic relief. This movie still kept its solid blend of action and dark comedy.
Because the budget was much higher, the action and violence was done much better. I am glad the same director returned to keep the tone in line with the original. The only thing that really brought this film down was the plot.
It was generally okay, but it got majorly confusing at times and the filmed seemed very dragged on at moments. I think 15 minutes of the film could have been cut. Overall this is a good movie and a solid sequel to the original.
If you are a fan of the original like me, see this movie but don't expect it to be better. I mean common....the original is untouchable. All in all, I say bring on Boondock Saints 3!!!
